ROMANTIC WESTERN BOOKS

COWBOY FAQS

Cowgirl on her Horse

In my Cowboy Series books, I love exploring the history of the American cowboy's expansion while weaving in a generous amount of romance.

HOW DID RODEOS BECOME POPULAR?

Rodeos, originally known as "cowboy competitions," began with cowhands exhibiting their skills, tasks like roping, riding, and bronc busting mainly for boasting rights. Cowpokes from various ranches often claimed to be "the best" or "the champion." However, each contest crowned its own champion, leading to a proliferation of "champions" across the western states. The term "rodeo" and its related events gained popularity as the sport evolved into a regular exhibition of cowboy expertise.

In the early days, the spectators standing in a circle, or automobiles, became the arena boundary.

To resolve these rivalries, cowboy competitions were organized to identify the true top contender. Initially free for spectators, these events eventually began selling tickets, and organizations with established rules were formed, marking the beginnings of rodeos.
