COWBOY FAQS
RODEO IN ITS INFANCY
In my Cowboy Series books, I enjoy researching the history of the great expansion of the American cowboy and adding a good dose of romance. Rodeos, or "cowboy competitions," originated with cowhands who were highly skilled in their tasks—roping, riding, bronc busting, and whatever else the day demanded. The term "rodeo" and its associated events became widely recognized later, as the sport evolved into a regular showcase of cowboy skills.

Many cowpokes from various ranches claimed bragging rights as "the best" or "the champion." To settle these debates, cowboy competitions were organized to determine who truly was the best. However, each contest crowned its own champions, leading to numerous "champions" scattered across the western states. Initially free for thrill-seekers, the events eventually began selling tickets, and organizations were formed with established rules, marking the beginnings of rodeo.
